Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF)

Fly Like a Butterfly

Just 10 minutes from downtown, Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is a low-fare airport that draws travelers from across the beautiful state of Kentucky and Southern Indiana region. The airport offers nonstop service to more than 35 destinations on eight airlines. With just one stop, travelers from across the region can reach more than 460 destinations in the U.S. and worldwide. In 2022, the airport accommodated 3.89 million passengers, it’s third busiest year on record. SDF’s best year to date is 2019 with more than 4.2 million passengers.

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport ranks third in North America – and fifth in the world – in the total amount of cargo handled as we are home to the United Parcel Service (US) International air-sorting hub, Worldport. The airport handled more than 6.76 billion pounds of cargo, freight and mail in 2022.

Military Operations

When it comes to our brave men and women in the Kentucky Air National Guard we’ve spared no expense. The Kentucky Air National Guard’s 123rd Airlift Wing is based at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and provides U.S. military and humanitarian operations with a worldwide theater airlift. Inside the wing you’ll find not one, but eight C-130 H model aircraft. Five groups of men and women, made up of 14 squadrons, carry out the unit’s mission by providing administrative and logistical support.

Cargo Operations

A Cargo Operation That’s Precious to Louisville

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport was forever changed when, in 1982, United Parcel Service (UPS) began its new overnight-delivery business using SDF as the main hub operation center. Constructing a 350-acre apron for additional aircraft, initially creating jobs for 135 people and who sorted 2,000 packages the very first night.

UPS’s all-points international air express hub, Worldport, lies between SDF’s parallel runways, and connects Louisville to 220 countries and territories. UPS initially invested $1 billion in Worldport, which now includes 5.2 million square feet of modern technology and 155 miles of package sorting conveyor belts, all under one roof. Opening in 2002, Worldport has remained as a committed home base of UPS’s global air network and UPS Airlines, the world’s foremost cargo carrier. Worldport’s air network includes international air hubs in Ontario, Canda; Shanghai, China; Miami, Fla. (to serve Latin America); Koln, Germany; Hong Kong and a newly completed intra-Asia hub in Shenzhen, China.
