Free exhibit extended two more weeks

The exhibit “The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation” hosted at Bowman Field will be extended two additional weeks, now ending March 14. Initially scheduled during February in honor of Black History Month, the event will remain in place longer because of the recent winter weather.

“Mother Nature was not kind the last few weeks and we know this hindered the ability for some people to visit Bowman Field and experience the exhibit,” said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, which owns and operates Bowman Field. “It was important to us to keep the exhibit in place a little longer to make sure everyone in the community who wants to learn about the significant contributions of these pioneers in aviation has that opportunity.”

“The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation” exhibit showcases specific members of the Black aviation community and their achievements. Through the usage of visuals, visitors learn how these men and women got their start in aviation, any adversity they experienced and how they ultimately achieved greatness and rose to prominence. The exhibit spotlights 14 individuals and organizations including: Bessie Coleman, First Black woman to receive a pilot’s license; Katherine Johnson, Black female mathematician who helped send a NASA astronaut on an Earth-orbiting mission; and Robert Lawrence, Pilot designation as the first Black astronaut.

This free exhibit will now remain open through March 14 to the public without appointment Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bowman Field in the historic Art-Deco terminal building located at 2815 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40205.

Organizations wishing to bring a group should contact Danni Kiefner at (502) 363-8546 or Danni.Kiefner@FlyLouisville.com to schedule a time to visit the exhibit. The exhibit will be operating under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the state of Kentucky’s social distancing and mask guidelines.
