U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced today Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) was awarded $11,490,479 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Bowman Field also received an additional $23,000. The federal funding was made available by the bipartisan Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2020, which Senator McConnell negotiated and led to enactment in December.
“Kentucky is ready to take off after the coronavirus crisis, and Louisville airports will lead the way. I’m proud the bipartisan bill I championed in December continues to invest in SDF and Bowman Field,” said Senator McConnell. “The past year has challenged our local airports and their employees. With these bipartisan rescue funds, Kentucky is primed for a strong economic comeback.”
According to FAA, the federal resources can be used for operations, sanitization, and to prevent the spread of pathogens at the airport. Of SDF’s total award, $437,670 was provided to support third-party vendors including car rentals, parking operations, and concessions.
“Now, more than ever, building and improving infrastructure creates jobs and facilitates business growth. Through Senator McConnell’s continued leadership for Kentucky, we’re receiving funds critical to the airport’s ability to support the local economy,” said Louisville Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Dan Mann.
Last year, Senator McConnell announced SDF received almost $45.2 million in federal funding, including from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Senator McConnell introduced the CARES Act in March 2020 and led it to Senate passage.
Before this funding announcement, Kentucky airports had received nearly $110 million from the bipartisan COVID rescue packages Senator McConnell led to enactment.
