The Louisville Regional Airport Authority is hosting the 2021 Louisville Aviation Camp on Wednesday, July 21 and Thursday, July 22 at Bowman Field (LOU) following a year away due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. This annual camp is conducted by the Aviation Museum of Kentucky.
“We believe it’s important to introduce youth to the aviation industry,” said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority that owns and operates Bowman Field and Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). “This really is an opportunity for us to support and foster future pilots, mechanics, airfield operators and so much more. Plus, campers experience all this at one of the best places, historic Bowman Field, a gem in our community and one of the longest, continuously operating general aviation airports in the country.”
During the two-day event, 24 campers ages 10 to 17 learn about a variety of aviation-related topics and co-pilot an aircraft with a FAA-certificated pilot (weather permitting). In addition to learning about the industry’s history and flight principles, they will examine aircraft and engine design, study flight planning technology, learn how to read aircraft instruments and aeronautical maps and practice on a flight simulator.
As part of the camp, there will be a presentation from a Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport Public Safety K-9 Officer.
