Newly improved exhibit returns for fifth year on display during Black History Month
In honor of Black History Month, the Louisville Regional Airport Authority announces the return of the exhibit, “The Sky’s the Limit: A Celebration of the History of Black Achievement in Aviation” to the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) following a modernization of its display. This year celebrates five years for this specialty exhibit and the third time featured at SDF where it’s prominently displayed in the rotunda, at the entrance of Concourses A and B. Nearly 396,000 travelers will have an opportunity to learn about these remarkable individuals and groups during the month of February.
“Five years since its initial debut, this exhibit continues to provide an opportunity for SDF travelers to understand the important role Black achievement in aviation plays in our industry as well as celebrate the accomplishments and lasting impacts of those spotlighted,” said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority. “Not only are we glad it’s back on display, but are pleased with the visual update to the exhibit that continues telling the stories of so many, who perhaps, may inspire those in our own community.”
Through the use of visuals, visitors will see how Black men and women in history got their start in aviation, the adversity they experienced and ultimately, how they achieved greatness and rose to prominence. The exhibit spotlights 14 individuals and organizations, including Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman to receive a pilot’s license, Robert Lawrence a pilot designation as the first Black astronaut and the Tuskegee Airmen. This year, the exhibit has been modernized to include additional images and four video spotlights of local Black aviation professionals with direct connections to SDF or Bowman Field.
Local organizations are invited to bring a group to experience the exhibit, even though it is beyond the TSA security checkpoint. To do so, they may contact Kim Pemberton at (502) 363-8506 or Kim.Pemberton@FlyLouisville.com to make arrangements.
