The Louisville Regional Airport Authority today announced that the $8.1 million extension of Taxiway Echo along the east side of the Louisville International Airport (SDF) is now complete and has been put into service. This 2,089 linear-foot extension enables aircraft from the fixed-base operator (FBO), the corporate aircraft campus and the Kentucky Air National Guard to remain on the east side of Runway 17R-35R (the East Parallel Runway).
“I have long championed the Louisville International Airport and its substantial economic and job-creation benefits to our Commonwealth,” said Senator Mitch McConnell. “This infrastructure improvement should only increase this world class facility’s capacity, safety and efficiency in serving Kentuckians.” The extension to Taxiway Echo not only helps to conserve fuel, it also enhances airfield safety by virtually eliminating the need for aircraft to cross an active runway prior to departure. In addition, airfield capacity Air Traffic Control efficiencies are enhanced.
The project was funded from a $7.4 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) entitlement grant along with $600,000 in local matching funds from the Airport Authority. “By providing a more direct route to the runway, the extension of Taxiway Echo will increase safety, efficiency and productivity for the Kentucky Air National Guard and other airport users,” noted Congressman John Yarmuth, who supported the FAA grant that helped fund the project. Representative Thomas Massie added, “Congratulations on the completion of the Taxiway Echo extension. I applaud the consistent efforts to improve resource conservation and increase safety at the Louisville International Airport.”
