Security Checkpoint Expansion Work Continues including Closure of Restrooms at Current Checkpoint

December 27, 2024

Construction is officially underway on the security checkpoint expansion project at the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), which is a significant piece of the of the SDF Next Program that will see more than $500 million invested in enhancements to the Jerry E. Abramson Terminal.

As part of this work, the men’s and women’s restrooms located immediately past the security checkpoint will permanently close on Monday, December 30 and will not reopen until the new checkpoint does so in 2026. The closest post-security restrooms to the checkpoint are now located at the entrances to Concourse A and Concourse B.

The new and expanded security checkpoint at SDF will be a 30,000 square foot addition to the terminal’s west side featuring up to 10 screening lanes, state-of-the-art equipment and a breach control exit lane. This $45 million investment will increase screening capacity by more than 60% compared to the current six-lane configuration. This project received more than $31 million in federal funding thanks to the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Additionally, the Kentucky General Assembly has also allocated $5 million towards this project through House Bill 1.
